Before The Wild Bunch, there was The Professionals, Richard Brooks's marvellous ode to friendship, loyalty, and disillusionment. It may not have the stylistic bravado or fatalistic doom of the legendary Sam Peckinpah film, but Brooks's storytelling is simple and steady and just as insightful. The difference is Brooks is a lot more optimistic. Lee Marvin and Burt Lancaster are buddies who have drifted into oblivion after fighting together in the Mexican Revolution. A lot of movies can be described as dripping with atmosphere, but in the case of Silent Hill it's literally true. Faithfully adapted from the Konami video games by French director Christophe Gans and Pulp Fiction cowriter Roger Avary (both self-confessed video game addicts), this dark and grisly horror-fest is nothing if not a triumph of cinematography and production design, consisting of a minimal and mostly incoherent plot propped up by a mysterious maze of sets that literally seep, drip, and ooze with the atmospheric evil of past misdeeds. Watching Baz Luhrmann's award-winning Moulin Rouge is a lot like falling in love. It is total immersion cinema and while you're experiencing it (watching is too passive a word) you can't imagine that cinema could be for anything else. In the harsh, objective post-viewing daylight Lurhmann's gaudy spectacular might seem like a triumph of glossy style over any genuine substance, but as the film unfolds Lurhmann subjects his audience to a such a barrage of overtly stylised music, dance, colour, design and human passion that the senses are overwhelmed and critical faculties put on hold for the duration. Home cinema showcases don’t come much more vibrant than the visually brilliant Happy Feet Two. Astonishingly well presented, in crystal clear 1080p, it’s a film that, from the off, rewards any decent investment made in home cinema equipment. 3D, too, has a habit of working best in animated productions, and there’s ample evidence of that on offer here. It’s not quite dancing penguins leaping off the screen, but it’s not too far off. Not that the film needs expensive hardware, though, to work its charms. Taking its cue from the original, Happy Feet Two once more integrates toe-tapping music, lots of penguins, and no shortage of comedy. In 1976 The Omen scored a hit with critics and audiences hungry for more after The Exorcist with its mixture of Gothic horror and mystery and its plot about a young boy suspected of being the personification of the anti-Christ. Directed by Richard Donner (best known for his Superman and Lethal Weapon films), The Omen gained a lot of credibility from the casting of Gregory Peck and Lee Remick as a distinguished American couple living in England, whose young son Damien bears the mark of the beast. At a time when graphic gore had yet to dominate the horror genre, this film used its violence discreetly and to great effect and the mood of dread and potential death is masterfully maintained. A film boasting a stellar cast, The Last Station is the story of the last year of life of Leo Tolstoy. Played here by Christopher Plummer, the film doesn’t tell you a great deal about the man himself, but it does nonetheless deliver some terrific, grown-up drama, as the arguments and battles surrounding the latter decisions in his life surface. And that means that there’s room in The Last Station for one of the best ensemble casts of recent times. It was Helen Mirren who picked up a Best Actress Academy Award nomination here in her role as Sofya, but truthfully, Oscar’s gaze could have gone in lots of directions.
