Supernatural thriller follows a young woman troubled by visions of gruesome past events. Joanna Mills (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is a successful salesperson for a Midwestern truck company and on the surface, has everything going for her. Privately, she's being stalked by a former lover and hasn't spoken to her father (Sam Shepard) in years. Worse yet, she's haunted by brutal visions of the grisly murder of a woman she doesn't know. She begins to suspect that the murderer is coming after her next. Note: Blu-ray discs are in a high definition format and need to be played on a Blu-ray player.

Anyone who's watched Family Guy knows that its creator Seth MacFarlane has a lot of hang-ups. As outrageous as many of them are in their animated TV show forum, they get a real rundown in Ted, MacFarlane's multi-hyphenate debut in feature films. As the director, producer, cowriter, and voice artist behind the title character, MacFarlane riffs on pop culture, drug culture, religion, sex, bodily functions, and all things '80s with the kind of abandon that borders on offensive to pretty much anyone--if only it all weren't so spot-on funny. Ted is an utterly believable CGI teddy bear who comes to life in the arms of a friendless 8-year-old boy named John, who quickly grows up to be Mark Wahlberg. John has made a wish that the pudgy plush be a friend for forever, a deal that they... Less

Blue George is a high quality HDSDI video capture device which encodes video (to H.264/AVC) and audio (to AAC or PCM) compatible with commercial Blu-ray players. The purpose of the Blue George device is to allow broadcasters and media professionals to capture directly from HDSDI sources and burn to optical disc in near-real-time. Blue George is a suitable device for many situations where speed and convenience of Blu-ray disc production outweigh the advantages of authoring the discs as part of the traditional NLE workflow. For example, compliance recording can be served by a simple disc archiving mechanism. Considering that it's based on such an apparently unfilmable book, the superb movie of Life of Pi is a genuinely staggering achievement. At heart telling the story of its central character, Pi, the film juggles an assortment of themes in an accessible, compelling manner, with a mix of drama, humour and relatable emotions. No wonder it won an Oscar for its director, Ang Lee. Lee, as it turns out, is a perfect choice for the material. He conjures up some quite wonderful imagery, to the point where there are moments you simply wish you could freeze the screen, print it off, and place the picture on your wall. He then blends in seamless effects work, not least a tiger who proves pivotal to Pi's journey, and most impressively of all, he turns it into a fabulous film, with genuinely broad... Less

If there's an undersea adventure with high-tech equipment, macho posturing, and lots of underwater photography, you know James Cameron must be swimming around the vicinity. Add the fact that Sanctum was released to theaters in 3-D, and it's clinched. Cameron served as executive producer to this crazy tale of a cave-diving expedition forced to improvise when a typhoon inundates their New Guinea location. (The film, shot in Australia, is allegedly based on a true event by co-screenwriter Andrew Wight, but it might be safe to conclude that the original incident was a jumping-off point for the high melodrama on display here.) A globetrotting billionaire (Ioan Gruffudd, of Fantastic Four) is underwriting this exploration of a hidden cave maze, which explains why he gets to bring his girlfriend... Less

Still best known for American History X, a film he tried to have his name removed from, director Tony Kaye's work has remained consistent and interesting ever since. It's been a lot lower profile too. Detachment is a case in point. Whereas American films about teachers taking on an unruly class in a trouble school generally end with either Oscar nominations or a hit single, Detachment is a lot more serious, and consequently more interesting, about its work. It follows a brilliant teacher, played by Adrien Brody, who goes from school to school as a substitute, rather than committing and getting attached to the one place. That inevitably changes, but the film's viewpoint on life doesn't. There's no gloss here, rather a superbly acted, down to earth drama, that has as much to say about the... Less

Seann William Scott may best be known for his career-making performance as Stifler in the American Pie movies, but as he proves in Goon, there's a lot more to him than that. In fact, here he plays someone that's against the characters of his that we've met before. In Goon, Scott is the innocent one, who just happens to have a real talent for bashing seven shades out of people. Which, consequently, leads to an ice hockey career. Goon works on two objectives: to be funny, and to be violent. It comfortably succeeds with both. The Blu-ray gives you the most unflinching, crystal clear view of teeth falling out and blood spilling, as Goon delivers on-ice action of some intensity. There's room for the jokes to keep flying too, and while the tone of the movie is wildly uneven, it nonetheless... Less

The first film of The Matrix trilogy established the Wachowski brothers as innovative filmmakers who push the boundaries of live-action films. Like the groundbreaking Star Wars, The Matrix showcases a unique visual style, one the Wachowskis achieved through an array of techniques and digital effects, some never before seen in mainstream Hollywood films. Although computer morphing technology had been used before in The Abyss and Terminator 2, the Wachowskis were the first to use bullet time, a time-bending digital effect that utilises both computer- generated imagery and still photography. The sequel The Matrix Reloaded showcased that visual style to further effect, with The Matrix Revolutions completing the trilogy. DVD Description The first film is a complex story that aspires to... Before The Wild Bunch, there was The Professionals, Richard Brooks's marvellous ode to friendship, loyalty, and disillusionment. It may not have the stylistic bravado or fatalistic doom of the legendary Sam Peckinpah film, but Brooks's storytelling is simple and steady and just as insightful. The difference is Brooks is a lot more optimistic. Lee Marvin and Burt Lancaster are buddies who have drifted into oblivion after fighting together in the Mexican Revolution. Marvin, the principled loyalist and munitions expert, lost his wife and his heart. Lancaster, the dynamite expert and unprincipled adventurer, keeps losing his pants. They team up with wrangler Robert Ryan and archer Woody Strode to rescue the beguiling Claudia Cardinale, who has been kidnapped by their old revolutionary buddie... Less

One of Disney's best-ever animated features, 101 Dalmatians arrived at a time when the studio's output was getting a second wind. Made just after Lady And The Tramp and Sleeping Beauty, and with The Jungle Book not far away, it was a rich time for Disney, and fans of animated movies. 101 Dalmatians is simply wonderful in its own right, though. In Cruella De Vil, Disney put on screen one of its finest ever villains, and its charming collection of characters are a joy to spend time with. There's lot to enjoy on the disc, and as always, Disney has provided something for all ages of viewers. The making-of piece in particular is of interest, given that it brings modern-day Disney talent together to look back at what makes the film so special. Unsurprisingly, Cruella gets a special feature all... Less

Back in 1991, Steven Spielberg came something of a cropper when he dug into the story of Peter Pan, and tried to establish what happened once everyone had grown up. Neverland has a lot more luck going the other way, though. It sets its story before the well known adventures of Peter Pan, and tries to find out just how he became who he was. To do this, it moves the story back to the start of the twentieth century, and crucially, pulls in a really impressive cast. Writer and director Nick Willing has brought together Charlie Rowe as Peter, along with Bob Hoskins as Smee--reprising the role he played in the aforementioned Hook. Then there's Anna Friel, Charles Dance, Keira Knightley voicing Tinkerbell, and Rhys Ifans stealing any scene he's let near as James Hook. It's Ifans who you long to... Less

When he's not making gargantuan movies about giant robots and/or comic book hell-beasts, Guillermo del Toro as a producer has fostered a movement toward dreamy, fairy-tale horror (The Orphanage, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark), where primally Grimm scenarios reach some unusually bittersweet resolutions. Mama, del Toro's 2013 production, continues this winning storybook streak, driven by a fiercely against-type performance by Jessica Chastain and an impressive number of uneasy frights. (How many times can a little girl ferally scuttling around the edges of the frame be scary? Quite a few, actually.) Beginning with a literal Once Upon a Time, director- cowriter Andrés Muschietti's film concerns a pair of young girls left stranded in a creepy cabin in the woods after a family tragedy... Less

A lot of movies can be described as dripping with atmosphere, but in the case of Silent Hill it's literally true. Faithfully adapted from the Konami video games by French director Christophe Gans and Pulp Fiction cowriter Roger Avary (both self-confessed video game addicts), this dark and grisly horror-fest is nothing if not a triumph of cinematography and production design, consisting of a minimal and mostly incoherent plot propped up by a mysterious maze of sets that literally seep, drip, and ooze with the atmospheric evil of past misdeeds. Welcome to the abandoned and perpetually foggy ghost town of Silent Hill, where grey ash falls like snow, a devastating coal-mine fire still burns in a hellish underground, and demons of various shapes and sizes make your worst nightmares seem like a... If there's a screen performance in 2008 that comes anywhere near to matching Daniel Day-Lewis' Oscar-winning turn in There Will Be Blood, then we've come nowhere near to seeing it. A tour-de-force of acting and a career high for Day-Lewis, it's the highlight of an extraordinary, really quite daring piece of cinema. That said, we've come to expect nothing less from writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson, the man who previously brought us Boogie Nights, Magnolia and Punch Drunk Love. However, he's really topped himself in terms of ambition with There Will Be Blood, an adaptation of Upton Sinclair's book, Oil! It follows Daniel Plainview (Day-Lewis) who, when we first meet him in the film's silent opening is attempting to mine silver, before he discovers oil and slowly builds up an empire off... Less

Watching Baz Luhrmann's award-winning Moulin Rouge is a lot like falling in love. It is total immersion cinema and while you're experiencing it (watching is too passive a word) you can't imagine that cinema could be for anything else. In the harsh, objective post-viewing daylight Lurhmann's gaudy spectacular might seem like a triumph of glossy style over any genuine substance, but as the film unfolds Lurhmann subjects his audience to a such a barrage of overtly stylised music, dance, colour, design and human passion that the senses are overwhelmed and critical faculties put on hold for the duration. The story is paper-thin, but that's hardly the point. Nicole Kidman's courtesan Satine falls for poor poet Ewan McGregor while pledged to a psychotic English Duke. The show goes on, of course,... Tremors didn't actually break any new ground (even though its tunneling worm monsters certainly did), but it revved up the classic monster-movie formulas of the 1950s with such energetic enthusiasm and humour that it made everything old seem new again. It's also got a cast full of enjoyable actors who clearly had a lot of fun making the film, and director Ron Underwood strikes just the right balance of comedy and terror as a band of small-town rednecks battles a lot of really nasty-looking giant worms. The special effects are great, the one-liners fly fast and furious between heroes Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward (and yes, that's country star Reba McEntire packin' awesome firepower), and it's all done with the kind of flair one rarely associates with goofy monster flicks like this. In his 19th screen outing The World is Not Enough, Ian Fleming's super-spy is once again caught in the crosshairs of a self-created dilemma: as the longest-running feature-film franchise, James Bond is an annuity his producers want to protect, yet the series' consciously formulaic approach frustrates any real element of surprise beyond the rote application of plot twists or jump cuts to shake up the audience. This time out, credit 007's caretakers for making some visible attempts to invest their principal characters with darker motives--and blame them for squandering The World is Not Enough's initial promise by the final reel. By now, Bond pictures are as elegantly formal as a Bach chorale, and this one opens on an unusually powerful note. A stunning pre-title sequence reaches beyond mere... Less

Home cinema showcases don’t come much more vibrant than the visually brilliant Happy Feet Two. Astonishingly well presented, in crystal clear 1080p, it’s a film that, from the off, rewards any decent investment made in home cinema equipment. 3D, too, has a habit of working best in animated productions, and there’s ample evidence of that on offer here. It’s not quite dancing penguins leaping off the screen, but it’s not too far off. Not that the film needs expensive hardware, though, to work its charms. Taking its cue from the original, Happy Feet Two once more integrates toe-tapping music, lots of penguins, and no shortage of comedy. Set during the Second World War, The Edge Of Love is, at heart, the story of a love triangle. In the middle of it is the poet Dylan Thomas (played here by Matthew Rhys), and it’s he who finds himself in love with two women. On one hand, there’s his childhood sweetheart Vera Phillips (Keira Knightley), and on the other there’s his wife, Caitlin Thomas (Sienna Miller). Throw in Caitlin’s husband, William (Cillian Murphy), and you have the basis of a complicated period romantic drama. The best parts of The Edge Of Love prove to be in the build up, with the strong production values really allowed director John Maybury to build up his characters, and get across the setting of a war-torn London. In 1976 The Omen scored a hit with critics and audiences hungry for more after The Exorcist with its mixture of Gothic horror and mystery and its plot about a young boy suspected of being the personification of the anti-Christ. Directed by Richard Donner (best known for his Superman and Lethal Weapon films), The Omen gained a lot of credibility from the casting of Gregory Peck and Lee Remick as a distinguished American couple living in England, whose young son Damien bears the mark of the beast. At a time when graphic gore had yet to dominate the horror genre, this film used its violence discreetly and to great effect and the mood of dread and potential death is masterfully maintained. Pretty much without question, the biggest selling point of caper movie Gambit is the names of the people who wrote it. The screenplay to the film, a remake of the 1966 movie of the same name, was penned by the terrific Coen Brothers, and there are several of their touches quietly dotted right throughout the movie. A full-on Coen Brothers movie though this is not. Gambit is also a film that's attracted quite a cast. Headlined by Oscar-winner Colin Firth, the line-up also features a wonderful Alan Rickman, a playful Cameron Diaz and an underrated turn from the regularly underappreciated Stanley Tucci. Each turns in good work, and each is great fun to watch. That said, even with those ingredients in place, there's a sense that Gambit doesn't always quite add up the film you might suspect... Less

The publication of a book accusing him of murder leads schlock television producer Barney Panofsky (Paul Giamatti) to reflect on his tumultuous life--from his troubled first marriage to his best friend sleeping with his second wife to his one true love… and how he destroyed the happiest time in his life. By turns comic and self-lacerating, Panofsky is a richly drawn character given vivid life by Giamatti, who's built a remarkable career on prickly people (Sideways, American Splendor, John Adams). Regrettably, the women in his life aren't as fully realized, but the strong performances from the actresses playing them (Rachelle Lefevre, Minnie Driver, and Rosamund Pike) do a lot to make up for the thinness of how they're written. A film boasting a stellar cast, The Last Station is the story of the last year of life of Leo Tolstoy. Played here by Christopher Plummer, the film doesn’t tell you a great deal about the man himself, but it does nonetheless deliver some terrific, grown-up drama, as the arguments and battles surrounding the latter decisions in his life surface. And that means that there’s room in The Last Station for one of the best ensemble casts of recent times. It was Helen Mirren who picked up a Best Actress Academy Award nomination here in her role as Sofya, but truthfully, Oscar’s gaze could have gone in lots of directions. David Lynch peeks behind the picket fences of small-town America to reveal a corrupt shadow world of malevolence, sadism and madness. From the opening shots Lynch turns the Technicolor picture postcard images of middle-class homes and tree-lined lanes into a dreamy vision on the edge of nightmare. After his father collapses in a preternaturally eerie sequence, college boy Kyle MacLachlan returns home and stumbles across a severed human ear in a vacant lot. With the help of sweetly innocent high school girl (Laura Dern), he turns junior detective and uncovers a frightening yet darkly compelling world of voyeurism and sex.
