Musicians have long proven to be a well of inspiration for film makers, and so it proves again with director Anton Corbjn’s telling of the story of Ian Curtis and Joy Division, Control. Based on the book of the same name, the first of Control's many successes is to make prior knowledge of the subject matter unnecessary. And while music is an important part of the film, the movie ultimately focuses in on the relationship between Curtis and his wife, Deborah. A killer rubber tyre? You read that right. And with a big wink to B movies of yesterday, director Quentin Dupieux’s Rubber is a solid, entertaining and downright bizarre piece of cinema. Rubber is a horror comedy at heart, and that’s hardly surprising when you consider what the plot actually is. For the film centres on the aforementioned rubber tyre, which just happens to possess psychic powers. It’s not long, then, before said tyre goes off on a killing spree. And when the film motors up properly, it really does deliver on the oddball concept. It takes too long to get there, though. Whilst the film makes no reference to it, you don't have to look far to see the influence of the London 2012 Olympics all over Fast Girls. First released in cinemas a few months before the games, the movie tells the story of a group of female sprinters who come together in an attempt to run their way to relay gold. At the heart of the group are the street wise Shania, played by Being Human's Lenora Crichlow, and Lisa Temple, a rival who hasn't had to fight for what she is in quite the same way.
