Guide To Buying Vacuum Cleaners
With so many out there, it's hard to decide which vacuum cleaner is best for your home. Read on to get a better idea of what to look for...
The type of vacuum cleaner that you buy will hugely depend on what kind of job you’ll be using it for. Buying a good vacuum cleaner is important as it is one of the most important things in the home for cleaning, but what do you look out for?
Well, there are two main types of vacuum cleaner: upright and cylinder.
Upright Vacuum Cleaner
The upright vacuum cleaner is, as it says in the name, upright. They’re generally quite bulky, heavy and difficult to move around (with the exception of some innovative models such as Dyson). They are usually used by pushing the entire unit forward and backward across the carpet.
Cylinder Vacuum Cleaner
The cylinder types are usually much smaller than upright machines, and are therefore much easier to carry about. They generally have a small unit with a long hose and head, which makes them great for getting in all the nooks and crannies, vacuuming stairs and cars and getting under sofa cushions.
Features of a Vacuum Cleaner
Some come with bags which can be taken out and thrown away, and some come without. The bagless types usually just require the container to be emptied directly into the bin, which saves on buying vacuum cleaner bags on a regular basis. Keep an eye out on your cleaner’s performance, as a drop in performance might mean it needs emptying!
Another good indicator of a good vacuum cleaner is the power. Generally higher wattage cleaners will perform better at cleaning as suction power is generally higher.
If anyone in your home is asthmatic, you should pay attention to the filtration system on the vacuum cleaner. The filtration determines the amount of dust particles in the air. The three types are lifetime, standard and S-class. S-class is specifically designed to reduce the amount of allergens in the air, which makes this type well suited to asthmatics and people who suffer with allergies such as hay fever and dust allergy.
What Type Of Job?
Think about the type of job that you need the vacuum cleaner to be able to perform. If you want to be able to shampoo your carpet, a wet and dry vacuum cleaner might be best as you can vacuum as normal, but with the added bonus of being able to shampoo it as often as you like too.
Hand held cleaners are great for things like vacuuming the car and stairs. Cylinder vacuum cleaners are also great for these jobs.
