Get those feet moving!
As Spring approaches and we breath a communal sigh of relief, it's time to get out and get those feet moving! Walking is a fantastic way to keep fit and get some fresh air.
You don't need a massive amount of kit to get yourself out walking, so it is a relatively cheap activity to get started. You also don't need to worry about your walking gear going out of fashion - the 'look' has remained pretty much unchanged for the past twenty years! So if your kit sits unused in the cupboard for a few months, or even a few years, nobody will notice!
The essential item is a good, comfortable pair of waterproof hiking boots. They will provide you with ankle support, minimising the risk of injury compared with walking in ordinary trainers. Don't be fooled by price - the most expensive are not necessarily the best. What matters most is that they fit your feet and ankles really well and feel comfortable. Make sure you wear a hiking sock when trying on boots - the shop should be able to lend you one if you don't have any of your own. They should hug your feet quite tightly, but not pinch.
You might like to treat yourself to some walking trousers. Again, this is all about comfort, so don't be fooled by price tags and labels. Walking in jeans is not a good idea - they can rub and take ages to dry if you get wet.
Layering is the best way to dress, so that you can strip layers off as you get warm. Remember to put them back on again as soon as you stop - if you have been working up a sweat, the wind will quickly chill you!
And, unless you are a strictly fair weather walker, then a good set of waterproofs is a wise investment. Generally, this is one area where you will get more for your money - better waterproofing and breathability are the perks of the quality brands. Three-in-one jackets that include a removable fleece lining are very useful.
So hook up with some friends, or check out your local walking group, and get those feet moving! You will instantly feel better, there's nothing quite like it!
