Realism isn't much of a problem for EA Big's latest racing game, Shox. With feet firmly in the arcade racer camp, the key elements here are speed, cash, cars and plenty of damage. For the single player, the Championship challenge is the best way to play the game. There are four championships in all, each containing six stages, and naturally enough these vary in location and environment. Starting from the bottom, the more races you win the more cash you get, and the more you can unlock. You won't want to battle the final levels with your first choice of vehicle, that's for sure. The courses offer a neat balance of speed and tight turns, and each has a variety of Shox Zones. These are effectively mini time trials. The original Soul Reaver was a sort of gothic-themed version of Tomb Raider, with a bit of The Legend of Zelda thrown in for good luck. This sequel, as you'd expect, is pretty much the same (with better graphics), but despite an almost overpowering feeling of déjà vu it's actually pretty good. The puzzles have been vastly improved so there's far less of the original's block-shuffling, and the combat has also been revamped to include a Zelda-style target lock-on that works rather well. Although often fairly functional the graphics convey the atmosphere adequately enough and the game camera actually works very well--which is a rarity in itself. Much has been made of the appearance of Sony's flagship title on the PS2. Detractors have complained it has fewer cars than GT2, it only has a couple of extra tracks and it's really no more than an update. But then it's easy to knock it before you've tried it. Combining first and third-person shooter action with the cerebral story-telling of the likes of Deus Ex, Project Eden is a deep and entertaining sci-fi romp for the PlayStation 2. Set on a future Earth crippled by overcrowding, the mood is dark and seamy. The game is seen through the eyes of a four-person police squad whose aim is to keep everything running smoothly and in an orderly fashion. Happily for us this is far from the case and the plot develops confidently through a serious of twists and turns to reveal a conspiracy which threatens the world (for a change).
