Author's Review
For an executive summary, read the bold items. I've had this item for nearly a year, its very reliable, and a heavy duty workhorse.
Coffee grinders should be practical, simple, reliable and effective devices: its just a grinding wheel on a motor. Alas, a number of expensive models have features made excessive and complicated then they skimp on its primary function, grinding.
This grinder is simply a bowl, a chopping blade inside it like the propeller of an airplane, a cup cover, a motor to drive the prop, and an on/off button attached to the cover. Push the cover down on the bowl to seal the bowl tightly, and the blade spins and chops whatever is in it.
Pros:
It will grind coarse to fine dependent on the time you spend holding down the ON button. Just a few second bursts will chop coarse for a French press, for example, and 30 seconds for a super fine grind.
It grinds quickly with a strong motor. I have had the older model 4 cup for over 15 years and it still works.
This model is slightly larger and can take more beans, at least 8 cups.
It feels and sounds like the older model, so likely it will be very reliable ... my old model still works, bought in 1988. AC motors are far better than DC battery models: strong, powerful and reliable. Black is a good color, hides dirt better!
Cons:
The cord is far shorter than the original, and it can be a minor hassle if your AC sockets are not in easy reach. The cord has no storage area but being shorter, is less in the way.
The grinder cover can be washed in a dishwasher, but the metal bowl cannot be removed. You'll need to clean out grounds with a spatula or brush, just like the older model. The bowl is not a tightest fit like the older model, a there is a tiny gap between the plastic body and the bowl that leaks grinds into it and may clog the interiors.
Like many things plastic, the cover-lid may break with long term use. In my old grinder, the lid edges chipped away. Then a crack appeared on the top, but not bad enough to leak grinds. It would be best if the grinder were made of metal with a small glass window to see the grind, and the grinder could last forever.
These are small prices to pay for a good product.
Perfection for this grinder? Change the following:
Removable dishwasher safe bowl
Metal lid with glass window
Stowage area with self retracting cord
It may cost more, but will last forever.
