A quality product, not just for coffee
Date of Review: Jun 26, 2006
The Bottom Line: I highly recommend this grinder to anyone who likes things that last a long time.
My mother has this same coffee grinder and has had it for many years. When I got out on my own and got married I purchased an electric coffee grinder (can't remember what brand it was) and it broke the first year, so I decided to get the same one my mom has. I have had it for at least 5 years now if not longer and I've done more with it than just grind coffee.
Once I needed some powdered sugar, so instead of running to the store to get some I just put some regular granulated sugar in the Krups grinder and in a few seconds I had powdered sugar, no problem! I often use it to grind spices when I need the ground form and only have whole. Once I even chopped some almonds in it. The blades are very sharp and so far have stayed that way even with all the things I been doing with it.
Cleanup can be a bit difficult since the stainless steel cup is part of the base and does not remove for cleaning. I use a little miniature basting brush to whisk debris away from the blades and then wipe it out with a damp washrag. Although it is never advisable to clean any such appliance while it's plugged in, sometimes a person forgets. But the safety feature only allows the Krups grinder to run with the lid on and the button on the lid pressed down.
Since there are no settings the grind is controlled by the amount of time you process it. With a bit of experimenting I soon got the hang of it and can now make perfect ground coffee for my automatic drip coffeepot as well as fine ground beans for espresso. I found it helps to stop inbetween and shaking the grinder up and down to loosen and mix up the stuff inside to get a more even result.
Krups is well known for quality products and my coffeemaker is also a Krups. I can't remember what I paid for it, it's been so long ago but I know it wasn't all that much.
