Great little device for entertainment on the go

by  attatae,   Feb 13, 2008

Pros:  Earphone quality as good as any other earbud-style, easy navigation

Cons:  Non-stellar sound output (especially via speakers), no SRS WOW

The Bottom Line:  Great for anyone who wants very simple to use product, that's also compact and stylish. Not for extreme sound lovers.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

I purchased this edition of the ipod around 3 months ago and it has done just what I wanted it to - keep me entertained while I do other tasks, whatever they may be.

Using this product is simple, and even though I had never owned an ipod before I could easily figure out how to navigate the device. I own a Macbook, so this was pretty much the main choice available at the time. Navigating the menus is simple with the scroll wheel, and the display is bright and the images are crisp - even at only 50% brightness!

A really cool feature that I like is surfing album art. It is an excellent feature, although sometimes it lags (the pictures take a second or so to show up, usually if the device has just been turned on)- however, there is another update that I have not installed because I am unsure whether it will cause my files on the hard drive of the ipod to be deleted. However, it does not bother me much at all, thats why I haven't bothered with going to online forums and finding out if my stuff will be deleted.

The supplied headphones are pretty good, they stay in my ears, and are just as good as my friends $120 Audio Technica earbuds, however in-ear or over ear will of course be much better, though these not easy to use on a regular basis.

Some cons about the device - if you are a sound "junkie", this ipod (or any ipod) probably isnt for you. I am pretty into sound myself, I even purchased $400 earphones before (well for me they were $180, from Shure, the e4c's), but if you are the type that goes out and buys ultra premium cables for all your sound devices, this isnt your up of tea. Even I can notice that although my Macbook pumps great sound through aftermarket speakers, the ipod, through the same speakers, just doesnt do as good a job.

Another con is the lack of SRS WOW for the ipod, this is a great feature available on iRiver stuff but not on ipod.

Overall, however, the ipod is a great choice for anyone with a Mac, or someone with Windows who isn't very tech savvy and just wants a great looking and simple to use product.

Note - I put one of those clear sticker shields on my ipod, so I cannot attest to any scratching or what not. Mine is from shieldzone.com, head over to ilounge.com also if you would like to see what things are available for the ipod.
