Product Review

I don't like them...

by   mdickerson ,   Apr 18, 2007

Pros:  Nice design, solid feel, nifty control.

Cons:  Un-natural sound.

The Bottom Line:  For anybody that likes neutral sound, I can't recommend them. Since that's what I like, I must give them one star. I also can't recommend them to that same audience.

Overall Rating: 1/5 stars

Author's Review

I have never really been impressed by the Bose sound. Ever since I listened to their much ballyhooed 901-series many years ago, I didn't like their ideas on sound shaping and reflected soundstages. I didn't get a chance to actually hear this set at the store because the setup was broken or off, but I had hoped they would have changed their approach. No such luck.

I found the bass to be muddy where it was needed (low-mids) and way too thumpy. The highs were muted. They sounded a lot like when you put your EQ on one of those settings where it looks like a "U" shape on a set of speakers that just can't handle it. I think the set is very capable, but I wish they would add a switch that turns of the fancy features and just gives a neutral speaker set.

I tried for two days to essentially turn off the sound shaping by adding an external equalizer, but the set only succeeded in annoying me and giving me a headache. The problem is that the sound shaping is not just a fixed response EQ, but it varies with the volume. They go back tomorrow. I can't get used to the sound. Some people may like them, but I'm one of those people that sets the bass and treble controls to the mid-point.

Make sure you listen to them before you buy. Don't buy based on appearance or reputation and certainly don't try to justify your purchase afterward by saying they're the greatest.
