Almost as inexpensive as the ink
Date of Review: May 11, 2009
The Bottom Line: If you are looking for an inexpensive simple all-in-one machine this should be on your list.
I am a photographer, but I don't print locally. I use labs to print on actual photo paper because I believe they are superior to ink jet prints in terms of longevity and quality. That said, I use my printers for everyday printing, receipts and contracts, and proofing.
I used to have a separate scanner and printer, but when my old Canon Pixma 1600 was needing replacement (a mix of cat hair and too much ink) I decided to consolidate. While I can't scan slides, the MP240 does a very decent job of scanning and printing. It has a handful of buttons on the top that make it very easy to copy or scan without finding programs and menu items on the computer. Add some fax software and it's a fax machine, too.
For the everyday tasks this does a great job. The colors are reasonably accurate with the canned profiles, and this goes for both the prints and scans.
I found it very easy to use, simple to set up, and simple to run.
I have had this printer for over six months and have never had a problem. Again, it's not what I'd use for printing photos, but for scanning and printing the everyday stuff, it was inexpensive and it is very reliable. I have not had any instance where I wished I had bought something else. The ink is relatively inexpensive as printers go, and seems to last an average amount of time. Because the print heads are built into the ink cartridges, they are replaced with every ink change, so no long term issues with clogging, either.
