Samsung Could Do Better
Date of Review: Jan 8, 2007
The Bottom Line: Upconversion is good, but it has problems during disc play and with menus.
I purchased this dvd player to go with the Samsung 50" DLP I purchased. While I've found the DLP TV to be up to par, I have found this dvd player isn't. The main selling point was that this is an up conversion dvd player, meaning that using the appropriate out put, such as the HDMI output, the dvd player output the picture in an HD format, instead of the tv having to make this conversion. I have found that the image is great on this player. What I don't like about this player is the delay it seems to have when it plays the dvd. For instance, while you are playing a movie sometimes there is a delay, maybe just a couple of milliseconds, but still a delay from one scene to the next. This is one of those things that can take you out of the movie and back into real life, so it if a big strike against the player for that. Another thing I don't like is that there is a huge delay in the fastforward/go back. If you are fastforwarding through something and see that you are at the spot you want and hit play, well there is a huge delay in what the player is actually reading vs showing on the screen so when you hit play you area actually far past where you want to be. This gets old if you are watching something you want to go back and forth in. Another problem I have is that some dvd menus have trouble loading after a movie is done playing...like the screen will load, but you can't select anything and you have to turn the unit off and back on. One last thing I would like to add, I had to return the first player that I bought because it had difficulty reading about 50% of the movies I put in it. Even this second player has trouble sometimes reading disc that can be easily read in another player I have.
