Super Bright Easy to use Projector, Limited Projection Angle

by  jsbach,   Apr 27, 2007

Pros:  Ridiculously bright, clear crisp image, great response time, good DLP colors, great contrast.

Cons:  Fixed angle of projection, very very ugly keystoning correction artifacts. Light leaks.

The Bottom Line:  Great projector, fantastic contrast/intensity. LCDs better for color. Table or ceiling height only, no direct projection angle. Ugly Keystoning correction.

I take this projector on business trips, our office has two. The image is very bright, colors are typical for a DLP--yellow looks green, green looks brown, red/blue are accurate and vivid. This is a normal DLP color issue, it's not particular to this projector. However becacuse it's a DLP, contrast is amazing and whites are practically blinding in a dark room, and it does quite well in a bright room.

On the minus side, it leaks a lot of light, it is very hot if you're close, and makes a constant fan noise throughout use. Keystoning correction is terrible. It's blocky and very ugly, so you really need to place the projector in the right spot rather than trying to correct the image with the menu. Which leads me to this-->

STUPID (INTELLIGENT?) DESIGN POINT:

The angle of projection when the projector is sitting flat is about 35-40 degrees up. You *must* either ceiling mount this projector too high or place it low, at about table level. Unfortunately you cannot direct project an image at a "safe" height. Up-angle projection is a great feature for a boardroom where the projector typically sits at the end of the table, but is absolutely useless just about everywhere else--especially when you have a wandering presenter.

Bottom line is you are forced to place this projector at waist height and keep a clear a path between the projector and the screen. People walk in front of it, place things on the table in front of it.. Spill drinks next to it, constantly feel the heat of the light during presentations.. Why can't the angle be adjusted? A good solution would have been a tripod mount on the TOP so it could be turned upside down and mounted above people's heads. If the keystone correction didn't do so much damage to the image quality, this would not be an issue.
