Great camera for new SLR user
Date of Review: Jul 28, 2007
The Bottom Line: This camera is perfect for a better than average amateur looking for their first digital SLR.
This camera is fabulous for a user that's new to SLRs. It's fully automated for when you first start, then you can start using other features as you learn them. You can make it so simple for a newby and incredibly complicated for a more advanced user.
The body is nice and light, and so far mine has survived a few good knocks. Changing lenses is easy, and most of the usual Canon controls are in the place you'd expect them. I have smaller hands, and the body size makes it easier for me to use than most SLRs, and the buttons are close to where you'd expect to find them.
In bright light the LCD can be hard to see, and you can't aim the camera by looking at the LCD. This is only a problem for me because I wear glasses, and the adapter is not strong enough to compensate for me taking them off. This is only because I have a strong prescription, which is not a problem for the average user.
Battery life is really good, probably because the LCD is only on for a couple seconds after the shutter is pressed, and when you are reviewing photos or changing settings in the menu. I find it's easier to just take your pictures and worry about what you got later, extending battery life. This works fine unless you are taking them in RAW format. The batteries are also rechargeable, which can also save a fortune.
All in all, though, a fantastic camera with fast response time and good quality pictures. A great starter SLR!
