The story takes place in the dark, gritty Hong Kong of the near future, Fear Effect follows the adventures of three mercenaries looking to cash in on the mysterious disappearance of the daughter of a major crime lord. The graphics of Fear Effects are like an anime style which some people likes it and some people don't. The characters you control look like motion-picture-quality animated figures amidst compelling Blade Runner-esque environments.
The First reason that is good is since the game utilizes highly detailed polygonal environments as opposed to pre-rendered 2D backdrops, the action moves seamlessly from one area to the next with no load times. Couple that with cut-scenes that utilize actual game graphics, and you have a game that feels and looks like a playable movie.
The story line boasts numerous plot twists, but in the end it is linear in fashion, and the key to success is in guessing exactly what sequence of actions needs to be performed at a given moment. There are several puzzles you will have to figure out, but the answers and clues are always hidden somewhere nearby. Despite some rigidity of structure, you'll have a good time blasting yourself through this Resident Evil-style game, and you'll delight at the plot twists and mature themes that result in a decidedly fascinating experience. (It is too violent, dark, bloody for young kids) This game has tough enemies, lots of shooting action, some really challenging brainstumps and even some platform elements, every skill you have will be tested.
You'll probably never see another PlayStation game as ambitiously designed as Fear Effect. This game redefines what a gamer should expect in an adventure title. You'll never be sorry you played Fear Effect, but you're likely to discover that it's slightly better as a movie than as a game.
