Finally, something only adults can enjoy.

Pros:  A great advancement in gaming. Great graphics and voice acting.

Cons:  Many parts require trial and error. Very mature themes. Tricky control.

The Bottom Line:  Fear Effect is a PlayStation gem that older teens and adults will enjoy. It's like Resident Evil, minus a whorde of zombies, in a John Woo fashion.

Fear Effect is not for kids, which is why it's rated M. But even so, younger audiences may not understand what is going on. The game takes place in futuristic Hong Kong, where you control three mercanaries Hana, Glas and Deke. The game starts off as a rescue of a rich man's daughter. It's not as easy as they thought it would be to save her, since the place is heavily guarded. Things start getting strange later on, when the three are sent to a jungle.

There's more, but you have to play...

Graphically, the game looks good. The worlds are in full motion video, which the quality may not be high-res. Still, it's good to see that the places you go and see are vibrant and active. The character design was made very well. It's almost like guiding comic book characters through a real environment.

The sound is good too. While there isn't a constant flow of music, the ambient sounds take care of the job. The sound effects are good, but a bit on the crackly side at times. However, the voice acting is great, and there's a lot of it.

The gameplay leaves a lot to be desired, mainly in the control department. The Resident Evil like movement is dead, no more, please. The invetory selection is also a bit of a task to get used to. The game does support analog control, but you many only want to use it for quick escapes, or large places. The D-Pad feels more precise. At least the interface is clear.

The game itself is not easy. I found my self seeing the "Game Over" screen many times in my first hour, and still do throughout the game. A lot of places require trial and error to make it through. The game also plays like a movie, and pieces video with action very well. But sometimes, it feels like playing the old 1991 game "Out of This World", where you have to see a cinematic of your death (but in Fear Effect, the video is much better, and much more graphic).
