Product Review

Cheap - Simple to use - ROCK solid

by   seattlesailor ,   May 10, 2008

Pros:  Simple, inexpensive, tough as nails

Cons:  lack of even a rudimentary base map

The Bottom Line:  With this unit you can have 3 of them, backups!, for the price of 1 fancy unit. www.sailingfreespirit.com

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

In 4 years of sailing this is the only unit I used with marine maps by Nobletech on a laptop. This is a GPS to use with other maps, the base maps are useless. Simple to use and enter waypoints. I was very impressed by the toughness of this unit. Dropping, saltwater baths, rain for days, sand, tropical sun, it survived it all for 4 years of continues marine and hiking use. The power cord even survived and recovered from several short circuits in salt water. The cookie crumb is very handy for getting out of harbors in a fog. Very accurate with good maps, I entered several harbors at night (calm btw) with fog and hit the harbor entrance dead on. The backlight is adjustable/on/off for night use. Easy to read even in tropical sun. Battery life is 8hr min. You can extend the batteries for weeks by only checking your position a few times a day. Another reason this unit is better than most marine units is that if your power system fails you still have navigation (AA power) and you can grab it quickly for abandoning ship. Keep an extra unit and lots of AA’s in your ditch bag. The removable dash mount and power cord will work in any boat.
