GarminMap60CS V's Magellan Meridian Colour/ Platinum
Date of Review: Sep 26, 2005
The Bottom Line: I'd not be without this bit of a kit when the weather turns for the worse!
After carrying out a fair bit of research and reading loads of users reviews,
my choice was between the Garmin MAP60cs and either the Magellan Meridian Colour or the Magellan Meridian Platinum. (Both the 60CS and Platinum have a barometric altimiter, the Meridian Colour doesn't).
It is going to be used solely for mountaineering/ orienteering predominantly in Scotland and Wales so needed to be quite robust.
Upon seeing the two "in the flesh" there was in fact, no choice. The Garmin was head and shoulders better than the Magellan. It's build quality felt better and it certainly felt more robust. It was also lighter and considerably smaller whilst maintaining a similar screen size. You know the sound of expensive car door makes when you close the door as compared to a cheaper model? If so then you'll know why I preferred the Garmin.
A route was plotted with Memory map and in the twitch of an eye exported to the Garmin. Simplicity in the extreme!
On the trail, I decided to blindly follow the route I had planned, just as if in a complete whiteout. The spot height taken on the summit not only matched exactly as per the map but having paced out the distance from a waypoint to the summit the distance measured up exactly. To the meter! I pretended the weather had taken a turn for the worse and followed off one of several emergency ascents I'd planned and I was lead directly to where I'd parked the car.
All in all, The Garmin Map60CS, when used in conjunction with Memory map is an excellent aid to navigation. Highly recommended!!
