r7 SUPERQUAD, a fine tuned EXPLOSION

Date of Review: Nov 5, 2007

The Bottom Line:  If you want a club that will put you much further down the fairway and something you can fine tune, this is your new driver!
I seem to always be in the market for a great driver. The two most important things for me when hitting a driver is accuracy and distance. I am not going to lie and say that distance doesn't matter that much to me as long as it is in the middle. If I worried about that I would simply hit a three wood or Iron off of the tee. Distance is a huge factor to me because I play a lot of match play and I also play for a lot of side money, pride, and tournaments. If I can be the longest off of the tee against my opponent or opponents, it becomes a huge advantage. First of all the pressure is on them to make a great second shot when they are already behind in yardage, secondly, the mental game of them thinking they can not beat me comes into play. Yes sometimes this backfires you might be thinking when I bomb one out of bounds but when I am keeping the ball in play I am tough to beat.

Extra length off of the tee also sets up shorter approach shots which are much easier with shorter distance clubs such as a pitching wedge, 9 iron, or gap wedge.
The best thing about this club other than the results is the fact that it has 26 grams of moveable weight which allow the driver a 28 yard lateral trajectory change and 1.5 degree launch angle change. There are actually four ports for these moveable weights, two 12 grams and two 1 grams. If you like to tweak anything else you own you will love this club. You can fine tune it to your exact specifications and need whether it be for loft or distance. This club is the first 460cc driver with four moveable weights.

Appearance:

This is a really cool looking driver. Taylormade used up all of the 460 cubic centimeters allowed for the head of this driver. The top portion that the golfer sees while teeing up is completely black with the standard taylormade emblem as a center point to show the center of the sweet spot. I say center of the sweet spot because most of the club face is now a sweet spot. It compares easily to the barrel on an aluminum bat compared to a wooden bat. The sweet spot is so much larger now allowing more forgiveness on miss hits.
The side or toe angle is also black with a bright yellow mark added in above the toe weight port and 460 MWT is added above the design.
The Bottom which has become more of an artists canvas to the club manufacturers is designed very nicely with r7 SUPERQUAD and the TaylorMade emblem in yellow red and white. This really is a sharp looking club head if that holds any importance to you as a golfer.

Sound:

The best part about what this club lacks is that it lacks that new tin can or hollow coffee can sound that some of the new drivers make. This sounds just like Callaway's Ft5, is a little bit louder than Cleveland's Hi Bore and is most comparable to the new Ping driver. You will be pleased with the sound of this club on contact.

Price:

I paid $400 for mine, I think they are still selling in that ballpark. It is a popular club and should not be hard to find.

Features and Specs:

26 grams of movable weight in four ports that promote 28-yard lateral trajectory change and 1.5?launch-angle change. Includes two 12g and two 1g weights

Massive 460 cc clubhead combined with TaylorMade's Inverted Cone Technology produces an extremely-high eMOI that exceeds 5800

Exceptionally low-deep CG and massive clubface area makes this driver exceptionally easy to launch on a high, strong trajectory for long carry and phenomenal distance

TaylorMade REAX 65 shaft by Fujikura reduces ovaling in the mid-section and promotes stability, consistency and increased clubhead speed

Effective MOI (eMOI) is the positive influence on ball speed on off-center hits that's exerted by the combined effects of a driver's MOI and clubface technology (versus constant-thickness clubfaces). eMOI in TaylorMade drivers is dramatically higher, and more valuable in terms of its affect on ball speed, than MOI alone, owing to benefits of TaylorMade's patented Inverted Cone Technology.
