Yet Another Great Driver From TaylorMade
Date of Review: Nov 19, 2007
The Bottom Line: -----------------------------------------------------------
Yet another year, yet another excellent big stick from the TaylorMade factories. It's becoming as much a yearly tradition as the groundhog not seeing his shadow and blessing us with 6 more weeks of winter or forest fires near/resulting from the 4th of July. All bad comparisons aside, seeing a new driver with the R7 logo slapped on it is becoming a regular occurrence. It's never too much of a stretch to assume the new driver is good, either. Every new R7 product I've tried over the past couple of years has been very good. There was no reason for me to believe that this years offering, the R7 Superquad, would be a let down in any way.
The first thing you're bound to notice about this R7 is the dark finish all over the club. That includes on the face. Even through the color of the face really shouldn't be a big deal, it gives the club a tougher, more badass appearance. It is also comes stock with the successful Re-Ax Shaft that debuted last season. The design makes for a stiff midsection with a more flexible tip and allows for greater swing speed. Keeping with the main feature of the R7 series, there are four movable weight slots on this 460cc driver. It makes for six different weight configurations to try to get the club to cancel out any swing flaws you might have. You can get the Superquad head in 8.5, 9.5, 10.5, and 11.5 lofts.
On The Tee Box
Much like the previous R7 drivers, the Superquad looks and feels very good at address. Just looking down on the head and feeling the nearly perfect weight gave me immediate confidence. The head is shaped into a traditional muscular pear shape that's every bit as appealing as any Titleist head shape. It's not as light as some drivers, but has a much more powerful feeling resting in your hands than any driver with a carbon crown. With the combination of the head and shaft, you get excellent feel of where the clubhead is in every point in your swing.
Much like the feel of the club when it's in your clutches, the clubhead and face itself is very powerful. Of all the drivers I've hit this season, this one is the longest. It could be the extra swing speed from the shaft, but the head does its part, too. Distance is rather useless without any control, but the Superquad provides that, too. It seems to prefer hitting a straight ball, but working the ball either way isn't out of the question. The Superquad provides the perfect combination of hitting it long and in the fairway.
Final Thoughts
The TaylorMade R7 Superquad is another great driver in a long line of great drivers. They've figured out excellent design well enough to only make slight changes and still get an excellent end product. As could be expected from a company like TaylorMade, this driver comes with a hefty price tag. I liked the Superquad, but didn't quite find it enough of an upgrade from my regular Titleist driver to splash the cash for one. However, it's a good piece of metal and you might find it worth its weight in gold.
