Kingston DataTraveler: Inexpensive Data Storage

Date of Review: Feb 17, 2008

The Bottom Line:  A good storage device which has been used and abused and still holds strong.
These USB storage devices do exactly what they are designed to do. I work as a police officer for a department of about 200 patrol officers in Colorado. I took on the challenge of making a digital database for our officers which was ultimately decided to be placed on to USB drives and be distributed to officers this way.

Our department ultimately decided to purchase the Kingston DataTraveler drives, most likely due to the inexpensive cost.

The design of these allows them to be plugged in to a USB port with a small opening, or tight fit, such as those on a Panasonic Tough Book. It is hard to find a drive that is able to fit into those tiny openings.

During my time in managing this project, we have experienced no failures with these drives, and have experienced only one being destroyed as it was dropped on the ground and then run over with a vehicle.

I am most impressed with the dependability of these, as most officers carry them in their pockets, which collect lint and dust. Being carried in pockets these are also subjected to extreme cold (-10F or colder) during Colorado winters, as well as high heat (100F+) during Colorado summers. I am sure they get even hotter when left inside a patrol car during the summer.

Many have reported losing the caps which cover the USB male end of the drive. This has been the only complaint I have received about these drives.

If you are looking for a drive that has been tried and tested in the means of being used and abused by a bunch of technologically impaired cops, then this is the way to go. These have held up wonderfully for us.
