Pros:  Easy to use. In camera editing. Manual and Auto settings- excellent

Cons:  No in camera cropping option for images. This must be done through another program.

The Bottom Line:  The Nikon D40 is an excellent digital SLR camera choice for individuals who wish to experiment with their photography without draining their wallets.

Author's Review

I love photography and certainly could be called a 'weekend amateur photographer. I've never taken any classes, but have read some books. I wanted a digital camera that was budget conscious, but not short on features.

I chose the Nikon D40. Nikon is a great brand that is well established and typically very user friendly.

This camera is all I hoped it would be. It is easy to carry, easy to use and provides options for your own creativity or using pre-set options.

The camera also allows for numerous editing functions such as color balance, tone, size of the image, color to B&W or Sepia, and many others. These 'edited' images are saved as new images so you never loose the original.

This camera allows you to manually operate every aspect of taking your picture, or use the in camera settings and still achieve great results. In camera settings include: action, macro, portrait, children, night, landscape, and 'auto'.

All stored images can be easily reviewed either one at a time, or via multiple images on the screen.

The viewing screen is large and easy to see with excellent image quality.

Flash can be turned on, or off, with or without red-eye reduction.

Image quality can be changed to RAW, JPEG fine, JPEG Normal, JPEG Basic and JPEG Basic + RAW. This provides the user with options in how the image is stored for different uses.

The image size can also be altered from small at 1.5MP to Medium at 3.3MP up to Large at 6.0MP.

ISO Sensitivity can also be adjusted for manual modes.

Shooting mode options include: continuous, which is great for action shots, single for portraits, Self-timer, Delayed remote and quick response remote.

Prints are clear and sharp. Images are easily uploaded to a computer, or print station.

This camera is definitely user friendly.
