SLR user-friendly

Pros:  Great SLR look and feel. Many, easy-to-use options. User friendly

Cons:  Can be tricky to manually set aperture or shutter speed. D40x has more pixels.

The Bottom Line:  Great for enthusiasts and eager beginners alike. I recommend it.

Author's Review

I dithered forever before buying this camera (then of course the D40x came out and I was annoyed because I would have preferred more mega-pixels). I am or should say was a die-hard Canon user and own a little A630. I was never very happy with that camera and really didn't want to buy a digital SLR from them and the reviews for the TXi were so-so (see a great --extra-ordinarily thorough -- digital camera review site, www.dcresource.com ). A salesman turned me on to Nikon. After reading the reviews I was impressed. Back in the day I was a so-so amateur photographer but now I just really need one step up from a point-and-shoot that gives me a few options. This camera does that and so much more. I love the body. It's easy to use and this Luddite actually understands the menu options. I can go fully automatic or fully manual. The only thing I can't do -- and for me it's not an issue -- is shoot a video. For those of you wanting that this is not your camera, but then again I don't think this camera is designed for you types -- it's for those of us who like to play with still photography, who want options, who want more than a point-and-shoot but don't want or can't afford a professional model camera. Let's briefly talk lenses now. Mine came with a 18-55 lens and the store was having a deal where for just a little more I could also buy the 55-200 lens. I like and use them both all the time. The only thing you need to know is that these are auto-focus and sometimes the big one 'clunks' into position as its focussing. I never think clunky noises should emit from electronics, but my photos still seem to be in focus nevertheless. The are easy to attach and detach. Overall, the camera's a bit heavy for a digital but I like that -- it feels substantial -- not plastic-y. And it's far lighter than the D80. When you lug cameras around when you're hiking or doing active things any ounces you can shave are great. Especially when, like me, you've hit a 'certain age.' Overall I've been happy with this camera.
