I purchased the Nikon Coolscan III (LS30) because I have an archive of 35mm underwater slides which I want to print. I am impressed with the high resolution I can get. I, initially, scanned slides in with a higher than necessary resolution and ended up with huge files. I cut the resolution way down and still can print 8x10 enlargements from 35mm originals with no noticeable degradation!
I am somewhat of a novice but I was able to do the installation and immediately use the scanner successfully. To use all its features will take a while!
The LS30 retails for about $1000 so it is a major investment for a novice! I am not sorry. The results are really rewarding.
I have used other film scanners which are less expensive but I have never found that they give as good results. If your need is just to put pictures on a web site than you won't benefit from the superb technology that Nikon has put out. If you are headed for printing photos, it is great!
