With the aid of Ed Hamrick's third party software, VueScan, www.hamrick.com, the LS-30 now has the functionality of the LS-2000, well almost. How? Well after Nikon introduced the LS-2000 they decided to market the LS-30 as a scaled-back consumer version of the LS-2000. They removed several features, most notably the ability to do multipass scan averaging to reduce noise, as well as making it 30-bit instead of 36-bit. Aside from those differences, all internal hardware is the same, including the dust and scratch removal. Well Ed Hamrick has done an end-around Nikon and put the multiscanning back into the LS-30. That means you can get scans with much better shadow detail and less noise in the dark regions of the scan, just like the LS-2000. I was absolutely amazed after I gave it a test using a particularly dark slide to work with, and it came out absolutely stunning. Dont believe me? Check out a comparison for yourself at http://members.home.com/bestprice/orig_vs_vue2.jpg The scan on the left is a single pass scan, and the scan on the right is a 16X multipass scan using Vuescan. I am not associated with Ed Hamrick in any way. I am just one of his happy customers who would like to spread the word to other LS-30 owners.
