The switch from the Original Game Boy to the Game Boy Color was the biggest jump between Game Boy designs until Nintendo went from the Game Boy SP to the Nintendo DS. The new features the Color offered were thinner design, better battery life on fewer batteries (it uses 2 AA compared to the 4 AA used in the original Game Boy), and, of course, ability to play new games in color, as well as continue to play the original game boy games on it (there are even some of the Color games compatible with the Original system, but they will not play in color on the system). If you own and/or have favorite games that are for Game Boy Color or Original Game Boy, I think the best system to play them on is the Color even though they play on the Advance and in some cases on the Original. There are many great games released for the Game Boy Color including puzzle games (Pokemon Puzzle League, Tetris DX), adventure games (Pokemon Blue, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe), and sports games (Mario Tennis, Extreme Sports with the Berenstein Bears). One last thing I really like about the Game Boy Color is the variety of bright colors they came in including yellow, green, and galactic purple.
