Great entertainment anywhere you go
Date of Review: Oct 20, 1999
The Gameboy is the only game system that has outlasted the passage of time with only a couple of practical improvements. It has filled the portable gaming niche completely. Gone are its competitors (Atari's Lynx, the Turbo Grafix Portable, and Sega's Game Gear). It has new competitors in the Neo Geo Pocket and the Tiger Game.com but nether has any chance of overthrowing the Gameboy. Over the years it has received two makeovers--one to smaller and clearer (Game Boy Pocket) and now to color (Game Boy Color). It is at a perfectly compact and portable size (any smaller and it would be difficult to play) which allows you to take it anywhere. It has great games with such classics as Super Mario Land, Tetris, and Final Fantasy Adventure. Recently it has introduced the popular Pokemon which has outsold the much vaunted Final Fantasy VII. Its 8-bit graphics are crisper than the original Nintendo and you can take it anywhere. It has an infrared port to exchange information with other Gameboy Color owners. It comes in many different colors such as Teal, Grape, and Kiwi. There is also a limited edition Pokemon Gameboy and Tommy Hilfiger Gameboy for collectors out there though I think that is sort of stretching the envelope. A lot of its games can be found for around 10 dollars at a used game store. It only need two AA batteries to operate and they are included. A optional AC adapter can be bought anywhere from 10 to 20 dollars. There is news that Nintendo might be coming out with a Gameboy 32 but I have no idea how much that would cost and the screen resolution can't take advantage of the extra bits. Bottomline: Great, affordable portable game system with great game library. Graphics could be better but it's no biggie. This one has staying power and will be around for a long time yet.
