The Tri-Ball's Little Brother
Date of Review: Jun 11, 2006
The Bottom Line: A great putter for the fans of the Two Ball line and those not quite ready for the Tri-Ball.
Hot on the heels of their newly released Tri Ball SRT, Odyssey has improved their world famous Two Ball putters. Long considered the world wide leader in putter technology, Odyssey has combined some of their best into the Two Ball SRT (Saturn Ring Technology). The milled aluminum body and weighted rings have been added to the White Steel insert to increase the moment of inertia and feel for better feel and accuracy. As a PGA Professional, I am constantly trying out new products in an effort to find a secret for improving my game as well as those of my students.
By milling the body out of aluminum, weight is saved which is then added to the two bars that go from the perimeter of the face to the back of the blade. These heavier rings serve to increase the moment of inertia for forgiveness on off center putts as well as to lower the center of gravity for reduced skidding on impact resulting in improved distance control and accuracy. The White Steel insert, a milled steel piece in the center of a White Hot urethane insert provides a firm yet soft feel for better touch and control.
I took on of these putters out to the practice green to get a feel for how it rolled the ball on real grass. The best thing about the rings is how much lower and deeper the center of gravity is on this putter compared to other two ball models. A golf ball will settle into a small depression on the green, no matter how firm and fast it is, in order to get the ball out of this depression, the putter must have a deep center of gravity so that the ball will not hop off line as it comes out of the depression. The rings also allow for hits that are slightly off center to not twist the club head and result in a bad miss. The darker body of the putter head also makes for more contrast between the two discs and the rest of the putter so that it is easier to align yourself to the hole. This has always been the best feature of the Two Ball line.
Being somewhat of a traditionalist, I did have some trepidation about the size of the putter, while not as big as the Tri-Ball, the rings do make the Two Ball SRT seem larger than the original Two Ball. I didn't see a drastic improvement in my putting with this putter versus my current putter, but that has always been the strongest part of my game.
I would recommend this putter to any player who is looking one of the most forgiving putters on the market and is ok with a non-traditional look. The added forgiveness provided by the rings makes it ideal for someone who is not as consistent on the greens.
