Good if you're a sport climber...

Date of Review:  Jul 7, 2009
Review: I've been climbing for 7 years, and got into sport climbing 4 years ago. I got sick of having to lock the rope off on my DMM bug whilst my partner hung on a bolt and worked out moves, so tried out a gri-gri. They're much better to use, as you don't...

Useful but not foolproof

Date of Review:  Dec 10, 1999
Review: The Petzl Grigri is designed to be a self actuating belay device. If the correct size rope is fed through the device slowly, as while a belayed climber is moving up the rock, the device allows the rope to move unhindered. If the rope moves too...

At least it's probably saved some lives.

Date of Review:  Mar 29, 2005
Review: Ok, think about your seatbelt in your car for a second.

Basically the GriGri is based on the same concept. When there's a sudden jerk of the rope the GriGri "locks up." And like a seatbelt the GriGri has probably caused alot of accidents...

Pros and Cons

Date of Review:  Sep 5, 2000
Review: I purchased the Petzl Grigri because people I trusted told me it was the perfect belay device. It is brilliantly designed and constructed. From a lead climbers point of view, however, I would like to point out the difficulty with which it feeds rope...

Review: a GRI GRI saves lives.
beginners as well as experts lose their attention. Even more so on those long trad leads or beautiful days. The Gri works great from the ground or as when you belay your second from above.

Are you lazy? The Grigri may be for you!

Date of Review:  Dec 15, 2001
The Bottom Line: Never breaks, and makes up for human error. But like anything in climbing, know what you're doing, and double-check for safety.
Review: While I personally still stick to my ATC 99% of the time, when you're belaying topropers, or in some cases aiders, it's a wonderful tool that can let you relax a little and not have to focus so hard on what your climber is up to. As a self-locking...

Excellent investment for avid climbers.

Date of Review:  Mar 20, 2002
The Bottom Line: An extremely safe (assuming you're using it correctly) belay device that makes the overall act of belaying easier and more enjoyable to do.
Review: I have to admit right off the bat that I love Petzl products. Their quality and contruction, as well as the logic that goes behind their ideology is generally exceptional and as a rule of thumb, almost everything they make is generally at least of...

Limited utility and price make this a dog

Date of Review:  Jul 19, 2001
The Bottom Line: Expensive, non-essential gear that's more novelty than utility.
Review: I've owned a GriGri for maybe five years and mine doesn't get much use. The GriGri is great in only two situations. The first is in climbing gyms. Anything gyms can do to reduce their exposure to personal injury liability lawsuits is worth the cost...

Belaying for Dummies

Date of Review:  Mar 2, 2006
The Bottom Line: Hands-down the finest, safest and most easy to use belay device for top-rope situations. A must-own if you climb at the gym.
Review: I climb exclusively in the gym right now, but I plan on getting outside and doing some top-rope routes once I get some strength up and better technique. With that said, use the information above to inform you that I am new to the sport; I'm not some...

Review: The Petzl Gri-Gri (P.G.)is the best belay device on the market and even beginners should shell out the extra cash and leave the ATC's at home.

The PG is an auto locking belay device that sells for about 50 big ones. This device is so safe...
