Great pocket camera

Date of Review: Oct 21, 2004

The Bottom Line:  Small, fast, and reasonably cheap: This is a great camera for anyone looking for a sub-compact, go-anywhere camera with lots of features and an optical zoom.
I've only had this camera for a few days but it appears to be a great little camera. It's an incredibly small camera considering it has a 3x optical zoom and the new processor makes it really fast, whether at startup or between photos. I mean REALLY fast. The auto settings are pretty good also, meaning you can get the camera out and be taking photos in literally seconds.

The picture quality is above par for a compact digital, no complaints. The controls are very intuitive so the learning curve has been very good. The battery life is decent, but I'll be buying a second battery as soon as they are available. The thing's got a really solid feel to it and people like the way it looks. The video setting works quite well and the sound is pretty good.

A minor complaint is that it has a pretty strong flash fairly close to the lens, so you can get a lot of red-eye if you aren't careful. It could really use onboard red-eye elimination software, but you can always do that later.

So far I highly recommend this camera. Sure, I'd like more control settings, longer battery life, etc, but that's the tradeoff for a subcompact.

Recommended to buy: Yes

Pros
Size, speed, optical zoom, price, quality feel (except for that damn plastic hatch!).
Cons
Lots of red-eye because it's so small. Easy to misplace for the same reason.
