SanDisk 512MB SD Card ~ Adding Another SD Card Makes Practical Sense

Date of Review: Jul 7, 2008

The Bottom Line:  I'm pleased with the SanDisk brand & recommend this card to anyone looking for a moderate storage capacity SD card.
I have several SD (Secure Digital) memory cards for use in my 6.1 mega-pixel camera. I put the most use on my Kodak 512MB SD Card and wanted to add another 512MB SD card as we are planning on going on our first cruise vacation in the fall. I use my Kodak 512MB for general day to day use and know that adding another similar size SD card will be the most practical choice for me and my needs.

I already own SanDisk SD cards and think that they give reliable and sound performance in a variety of photographic and video recording situations. This SanDisk 512MB SD Card was only $14.95 on sale at Walmart, and it was the perfect time to add another 512MB SD card for future use.

The SanDisk 512MB SD Card provides me with a moderate amount of photo and/or video memory storage. With my 6.1 mega-pixel camera I am able to get around 160 pictures and several short video recordings before it is "filled" and needs to be downloaded onto my computer.

I typically do not wait until the SD card is filled as the download time is quicker with less photo's/video stored on it, and it is also safer to download rather than wait a length of time; you never know if you might lose that card and with it all of your pic's and memories.

There is a mechanical lock on each of these 512MB SD Cards that you can lock to secure the pictures from being lost or deleted accidentally. I have never used this lock and so far have not had the misfortune to lose any pictures from any of my SanDisk cards. I do not expect this to occur on the 512MB one and do not plan on using the lock.

Keep the card safe in the camera or case, download and clear the card as soon as you can and you should have experience the same loss-free use with your SD Card.

There are SanDisk memory cards up to 8GB's but the largest I have is a 1GB. The 512MB is the most useful and functional for my photographic needs with a 6.1 mega-pixel camera. When the time comes that I move up in camera mega-pixels (to say, a 10 mega-pixel) I will also move up to a larger SD card to be able to handle that higher resolution camera. When you have a camera with higher resolution capability and quality, more memory storage is required, and thus fewer high quality pictures can be taken and stored.

When you purchase a SanDisk 512MB SD Card you will find it comes in it's own little plastic flip open case to help protect it when it is not in use. The case has a clip-like "lock" that you have to flip up in order to open the case. The SD Card itself is small, about 3/4" x 1 1/2" and is very thin and light. Being so small it is easy to lose, so if it's not in your camera (or other device) be sure to keep it safe in it's case and other secure storage area!

The SanDisk 512MB SD Card is compatible with quite a wide range of devices. All of the compatible devices can be found on the website, www.SanDisk.com ~ It is unnecessary to list all here, so if you want to check it out you can browse through the compatible devices on-line.

For general information and understanding, SD Cards/Memory cards can give you the ability or memory room to store lots of photographs, but much less room to store video and sound recordings. This SanDisk 512MB SD Card, for example, gives me (using a 6.1 mega-pixel camera) about 60 minutes of video time with QVGA recording at 15 frames per second, but only about 14 minutes at 30 frames per second.

If you choose the higher quality recording you will see a big drop in the amount of time you can record at that level. If you are recording in VGA, you'll only have about 31 minutes at 15 frames per second, and just over 3 minutes at 30 frames per second. The recording time does not differ with the mega-pixels - only the photo storage varies.

The color saturation with the SanDisk has been outstanding with fine details easy to see on 5" X 7" or 4" X 6" pictures. Enlargements to 8" X 10" come out smooth without distortion and with high contrast and definition. I am pleased with the SanDisk brand and would recommend this card to anyone who wants to have a functional SD card that can handle a moderate amount of photo or video storage.

Look for the bright blue SD card with the red top banner and you will know that you have chosen the SanDisk brand. The number 512MB will appear in white on top of the blue background.

If you have been thinking of adding another SD card, now is the time with the prices so low and affordable!

Thanks for reading!~ Judy
