Doesn't live up to the Sony name!
Date of Review: Jul 3, 2009
I bought this on offer from Sainsbury's, reduced from £799 to £599, I though I was getting a great deal. I had initially intended to buy either a 32" or a 37", as it was to replace a 28", this seemed reasonably big. So finding a 40" for this price seemed to good to be true...it was. Once set up, which doesn't take very long, the picture looked great. I sat back and flicked through the inbuilt freeview, very impressed by the picture quality. I decided to watch a blu-ray film to really give it a run for it's money, so on went 'I am Legend'. The first half hour was fantastic, the colour, the detail, the size of the picture were all great. Then there's a part where his dog runs off into a darkened building and he follows. I can honestly say that I had no idea what was happening as the picture got so bad. It was 'blocky' and just a mass of shadows. I have since found this a problen when watching anything shot in dark lighting. There is another, more constant problem, where during certain programs, mainly american tv shows, the sound vibrates and 'buzzes' loudly. It sounds like a bee buzzing very intensely and is very distracting.
So my advice to anyone thinking of buying this tv is that getting a 40" for this price is great! It is a great looking tv and will impress your friends and family, just be aware that it has a budget feel to it that you just wouldn't expect from Sony. Just looking at the remote control concludes this point, while you are initially impressed when you get it out the box, it soon proves to be tricky and hard to handle!
