Sony Cybershot DSC-H50 Bridge Camera
Date of Review: Jul 3, 2009
The Sony DSC-H50 is a versatile camera, it offers 15x optical zoom without the need to carry bulky lenses around, It has plenty of settings for someone with knowledge of photography, plus a simple mode for for beginners. I have found that the menu system is a little over complicated, and sometimes when you set something, it automatically disables another function you want to use, which can be frustrating. the 3" tilt LCD is very useful for getting shots at unusual angles or if you want to hold the camera above your head, but is useless if you hold the camera vertically / portrait as the LCD only tilts up and down, and not side to side. The viewfinder is an electronic colour one, the resolution is OK but not as good as a optical viewfinder. When it comes to taking photo's, there is no standby mode, and the camera shuts itself down after a few minutes of no activity, the restart takes a couple of seconds, which is quick, but there is the potential to miss a moment. Most shots are clear and sharp, the focus is quick in normal light conditions, and OK with the focus assist light in the dark. I have had good results taking night shots, using the manual focus, and the maximum 30 second exposure. There is some purple fringing on shots as you ramp up the zoom, but it is a small price to pay for the versatility you get with this camera.
one negative to mention is the battery life, although it lasts a while, I would recommend that you have at least one spare battery, for an all day session.
