Best MP3 Player For The Money Available Today
Date of Review: Nov 16, 2007
The Bottom Line: Highly recommended. It does everything it says it will do better than any other unit I tested at this price point.
The S616F is so easy to use I didn't have to read a word of the manual to easily set-up and use the player. The interface controls are very nicely organized and easy to use (even for a fat finger user like me). I know some people are critical of Sony's decision to put the volume control on the side, but I really like it because I can adjust the volume easily while working out and I have not had an issue with accidentally hitting the buttons. The file system is intuitive and very fast. The sync interface with Windows Media Player was also very fast. The battery life is as advertised by Sony. The battery life is as advertised on CNET. The unit provides several EQ presettings (I'm not a big fan of these features on this or any other player) plus manual equalizer adjustment. All in all, the sound quality exceeded my expectations.
Finally, the screen quality is wonderful. Graphics are exceptionally sharp and words are easy to read in all lighting conditions that I've encountered so far.
Although the unit does not have FM or voice record, and the Earbuds are uncomfortable, I view these as minor issues. This unit does everything it's advertised to do much better than any other MP3 player that I've tried.
If I was to make an alternative recommendation, I would consider paying the extra money and buying the S616F for the extra 2GB of storage. This unit can be found at either Target or Amazon.com for $119.
