Bare-bones inexpensive microphone

Date of Review: Aug 6, 2003

The Bottom Line:  Simple and cheap, but sound quality only marginally better than using the built in mic. Cord is too short.
I wanted a microphone for doing interviews with my video camera. An external mic is strongly recommended in most books on video, to avoid noise from the camera's tape drive motors. There were a wide variety of microphones available at the store. Large handheld mics from $10-30, table-top mics for $50, and other lapel mics from $50-120. I didn't want to spend a fortune, and there wasn't really good info on what you got in terms of sound quality for your money.
The mic is small, with a body 3x5cm (1.5x2"). It takes a watch battery (not included). The cord really isn't long enough for what I bought it for - it's only about 4' long, which really isn't long enough for any application unless it's for use behind the camera.
It was an improvement over the on-camera mic, although certainly not good. I was going to try using it for recording some voice-overs on the computer, but the sound quality for that purpose was so poor I decided to look into other microphones. (Bass response is very poor, and the sound is "tinny") So in short, its okay, but you can do better.
