Sony ingenuity in a petite package.

Date of Review: Feb 5, 2007

The Bottom Line:  This is a compact unit, with more thoughtful features and functions than I'd seen in any other alarm/radio/CD player. One feature skipped, was the back-up battery for power outages.
My older clock radio/CD player broke and I was in need of another. I had shopped around for a replacement and came across this completely fully featured, super-compact model.

FEATURES

This spunky little unit measures 7" x 8" x 7" in height at the peak. It has a 5 foot cord with a two prong plug attached. This clock radio/CD player also has a wire antenna with a plastic tip at the end, for better radio reception.

This is a TV/Weather/AM/FM clock radio/CD player with dual alarms that can accommodate 25 preset radio stations. The back lit LCD displays the current time, as well as both dual alarm times, when set. The back light is adjustable by a slide bar on the back of the machine. Even at its brightest, it does not illuminate the room, as I have read. Perhaps there was an earlier design flaw that had been corrected.

It has a unique nap feature that can be set for 10, 20, 30, 60, 90 and 120 minute naps. This one button is used for a nap instead of changing your alarm. The sleep feature plays music to the time you designate, then gently lowers the volume until it turns off. The snooze bar is conveniently located in the front and extends your sleep by 10 minute increments up to one hour.

The acrylic face of this unit is a pale blue, exposing the CD placed in it. To open depress the lowest button on the left side, insert CD and simply press down the lid to close. One superb advantage of this unit is the dual alarm feature, that actually can play different tracks of the CD to the different alarm times. If you and your partner don't like to wake to the same artist, no problem, this CD can read rewritten CD's, so you can make your own compilation. When setting the alarms to the CD, you can choose the volume to be awaken with. These alarms remain set, until disabled.

The built in speakers are to the left and right sides, in the center of the triangle shaped base. They play music in both mono and stereo. The sound is clear and bright, and is fine as a clock radio goes.

There are 14 buttons on the face of the unit, but it is not complicated to set. If I had lost my instructions, I would still be able to figure this one out. On the left rear of this unit, there is a jack placed for headphone use.

BOTTOM LINE

This is a feisty, compact unit that offers more features than any other I have seen. Sony has thought of everything in this one alarm clock, except pouring my morning coffee and tipping me out of bed. This unit actually does wake up this sound sleeper.

This player comes with a one year limited warranty. For more information, go to Sony.com or call 1-800-222-7669.
