Great DVD player for the price

Date of Review: Nov 6, 2002

The Bottom Line:  Get it, it is solidly built and delivers a great picture and sound, with all the right connections you need and a great remote.
I didn't need a carousel DVD player. I am keeping my audio seperate from my TV works. For the money, this one is right on!!

1. Features: It has 4 different audio and 4 different video adjustments you can easily make with one touch of the remote. I found this extremely handy -- I can adjust for each DVD easily with one touch. I especially like the video settings such as Enhanced Black Mode, Movie 1, Movie 2, and Anmation. We watched Monsters Inc. today and used the Animation setting and it was a GREAT picture. As for the audio settings, I like "dialouge" because I can set it on that when the kids watch a loud movie and I don't have to hear as much of the background noise, but they can hear the dialouge great. This keeps them from turning it up all the time. Other settings are 3D (which I found good when you don't have the surround sound hookup) and Normal.

2. The remote: Above Average. I am picky about remotes, so if I like this one, it is good. Not huge, and the words may be a little small for some, but it is not as bad as many I've seen and does not have that cheap feel to it.
You can do anything using the remote, including open and close the disc door. I have not had to get up at all through many movies. My DVD player is behind a glass door and not level with us sitting on the sofa, but it picks up the signal when the remote is pointed in the general direction. No problems there.

3. Connections: All you would need. Optical and coax audio out, as well as good old RCA, which is what I have to use. Sound is still above average even hooking it to the TV with RCA jacks. Has the component, composite and S video out as well.

4. Cosmetics: It is a nice looking player, and has blue digital readout. Runs messages across the front. It has not skipped a beat yet. We were able to play some CD's we burned on it, but my son only burns in CD/R so I can't judge the rest, although it is supposed to support them all. I don't plan to use it for CD playing, we only tested it for this review.

In summary, I am VERY happy I chose this player. I primarily chose it because I bought the 27" Toshiba TV, (27A42) at the same time, and wanted to keep with one brand. I am convinced you cannot go wrong with Toshiba. This all fit my present budget nicely for a "temporary" system. When I make the switch to digital in a few years, I can purchase the HDTV setup with progressive scan, etc, and it will be much cheaper than it is today. Also, no guilty feelings about spending too much.
