The Bottom Line: Make sure your carpet isn't too dense or long before you purchase this vacuum.
I have researched vacuums for about 3 months, although I have been shopping in my head for years. I found a great vacuum for me but I do not think this vacuum is for everyone. First are my pros: great suction, light weight (and I have lower back problems), great for all floors of mine, seems very hypoallergenic, long cord, great extra attachments, easy to clean the brush, easy to change the bags and filters, and very quiet. The cons are: the price obviously, this vacuum in not good on all carpet. What do I mean? After visiting with 2 vacuum dealers, I found out that my new carpet might not work well with this vacuum. I have frieze. If you have longer carpet than mine (which is 3/4" and very dense) you will not be able to operate this machine on it because it cannot raise high enough. The vacuum cleaner automatically adjusts to your floors and if the carpet is too long it will stop the machine. Now I am able to vacuum without any problems but if you were to add attachments to my vacuum while on this carpet to clean the baseboards, then the vacuum can and will stop automatically. This is the machines way to keep from over heating. If you add attachments on lower carpet or hard floors this is simply no problem. Another con is that the machine is very prone to tip over if using only the attachments given with the machine.
MY SUGGESTIONS: Have the vacuum dealer come to your house and try it out before you buy it. If you have hardwood or tile or want to use the attachments, buy the extension hose, additional tube, and parquet floor tool. These are excellent and will get under very low sofas. When vacuuming the stairs, put the vacuum on the bottom of the staircase(not on a stair) and not on the top of the stairs. I can vacuum my entire staircase that turns at a 90 degrees angle half way up. If you put the vacuum on a midway landing or on top of the staircase it could tilt. I tried out the turbo tool and found that I could do a better job cleaning the carpeted stairs with the given upholstery too. I tried to get dog hair (Chihuahua) off my corduroy sofa and I didn't need the turbo tool. However the turbo tool gives your furniture a "I have been vacuumed look" because it leaves lines like a vacuum cleaner does to the carpet. I have had my vacuum cleaner only 2 days and have vacuumed like crazy to test everything. Longevity, I am not sure of but my vacuum dealer says he hasn't had a repair in the 6 years he has sold these.
