Xerox Phaser technology - do not buy!
Date of Review: Feb 20, 2008
The Bottom Line: Do not buy. It is not a Xerox machine. Unreliable, noisy and expensive to maintain.
When I finally decided to get a color printer I went for what I thought is the best name: Xerox. The solid ink ads were pretty enticing and I found one under $1,000, the Phaser 8560N, that covered my requirements of low volume color printing.
It took less than two months and less than 200 pages to break down and came to the following conclusions:
- I wanted a Xerox machine but I found out that Phaser line is actually the former Tektronix technology and not much of Xerox smarts went into it. Thank you Xerox for selling me junk under your logo!
- the printer blew the house fuse and never recovered.
- Xerox recommends in the printer manual to leave the printer in "stand by" mode and not to shut it down: turns out that it is programed to wake up on its own once in a while and makes a lot of noise. Even in stand by consumes a lot of energy.
- solid ink is consumed slowly but steadily when in stand by. I found out that Xerox employees using this technology at work actually shut it down to save ink, but it also consumes ink at power up, according to Xerox manual.
- the printer operation, software driver and computer interface are not intuitive and not user friendly, much worse than HP, Lexmark and Canon printers I had in the past.
- I wanted to return the defective printer for a refund but Xerox has a policy that doesn't include product return, all they offer is free service in the first year. Not acceptable.
