Tungsten E2 is an upgrade from antiquated PDAs

Date of Review: Jul 2, 2007

The Bottom Line:  Think twice about purchasing this particular model since mine seemed like quality control was asleep at the wheel. The computer still works but speaker doesn't work anymore.
I have owned many many pocket devices over the years, some were better than others, this one falls somewhere in between. The NEC Mobilepro, with it's large keyboard that was lovely to type on, entering information was a breeze. It's not all that great for taking notes in class except to remember an assignment. This E2 is a little challenging to enter information at first if you've never used a Palm before. My first experience with Palm OS was with a Handspring Visor with a black and white screen. That one died and it was covered under warranty. Upgraded to a Clie. Clie died so I purchased this Palm to replace the Sony that was covered under warranty by the insurance company. I was initially very impressed with the E2 unit, but I'll admit I don't really use it all that much, although I especially enjoy the ability to share pictures with the gorgeous color screen. The screen is even (surprisingly) readable in the sun and it's color back lit. It's got contact features that are out of this world and you can input information from the keyboard at home allowing you to save some time on entering all that information in the old address book. Jot notes on screen, tasks, memos, picture viewer, this thing is literally packed with features. My speaker gave out eventually, and I haven't tried to get a replacement yet since I rarely use the thing, but I still like the E2 even with it's idiosyncrasies. I believe the headphone jack still works. My unit says it's made in China, so although construction is sturdy I purchased the extended warranty at Best Buy just in case. The E2 is not wireless internet ready without an SD Wireless card purchased separately. Battery life is good, although you still have to charge this thing because using the back light eats into your battery life, although the backlight can be turned off this really only works in bright light. A big plus if upgrading to an E2 is the non-volatile memory. The unit won't lose your data in the even of power loss (i.e. setting the unit in the closet and not using it). A somewhat recommended tidy little package with some quality control quirks.
