This is a new zoom lens from Tamron that lets you bring your far away subjects up close while compressing the distance between the main subject and the background for professional-looking results. Even while covering up to a 500mm that enables you to take ultra telephoto shots of subjects further than the eye can see, its design is extremely lightweight and compact. When mounted on an APS-C size digital SLR camera, it provides a focal length equivalent to a 760mm for super ultra telephoto imaging. Less

This lens, used alone without attachments, performs macrophotography from life-size to 5x magnification. This lens offers much better portability and operability for outdoor high magnification macro photography of flowers, insects, etc., than conventional bellows systems. The optics uses a 3-group floating system, which moves three lens groups independently for focusing. This compensates aberrations caused by the large changes of image magnification inherent in macrophotography, while achieving high magnification from life-size to 5x and a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture. A UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass lens element corrects chromatic aberration, which is often a problem in high-magnification macrophotography, and achieves a high-resolution and high-contrast image without color fringing. Cheap, lightweight, and decently sharp. Autofocus not ideal for wildlife

by tcchou71 , Jun 30, 2008
Pros: Decently sharp, long, cheap, lightweight.
Cons: Slow autofocus, no focus limiter. Minolta version front-focuses (though Canon is fine)
The Bottom Line: Almost a great lens, due to low weight, low cost, and good sharpness. But focus issues makes it difficult for wildlife photography.

Review: This is the THIRD time I have submitted this review to Epinions. My first review somehow vanished, only to reappear under, of all places, the Epinions listing for a SanDisk flash drive. I never reviewed that drive, and have no idea how my lens...

Stabilized long lens for < $850!!!

by tcchou71 , Apr 12, 2006
Pros: Light, long, relatively cheap and sharp.
Cons: No focus limiter. Tendency to front-focus. Soft, with purple fringing at 500mm.
The Bottom Line: Low weight and antishake make this a great long lens for hand-held shots. But I wish it had an autofocus limiter to help with flying birds.

Review: Epinions doesn't allow embedded images, which is a shame for camera/lens reviews. Hence, I've posted some images taken with this lens here:

Bug lens

by cal8 , Dec 12, 2005
Pros: Sharp, beautiful, extreme macro. Allows a vision into an invisible world.
Cons: Difficult to use. Makes taking pictures a real skill. Must have dedicated ring light flash.
The Bottom Line: For the fanatic that wants to peer into the almost microscopic world of extreme macro, this is the best. For almost everyone this is extreme overkill.
This reviewer recommends this product.
Review: I purchased this lens because I wanted to take some extreme Macro photos. Boy does it deliver. This is the best lens that I have used at taking pictures up close. The sharpness is amazing, and the results are eye-popping.

When I told my...
