The publisher Przeworski connected the three poems into one book, Locomotive, and commissioned illustrations from celebrated Polish illustration duo Lewitt and Him. Locomotive was the beginning of a creative partnership that lasted many years.Featuring the original three poems, Locomotive, The Turnip, and The Bird's Broadcast, children learn what's inside each train carriage as it chugs along, how many people, animals, and friends it takes to pull a turnip from the ground, and what happens when birds of all kinds gather for a meeting in the woods. After its original publication in 1939 in Polish, Locomotive was swiftly translated into French and English the next year,... ISBN : 9781473843684 This fascinating book explores the development of locomotives over the course of fifty years. From Richard Trevithick's first experimental road engine of 1801 up to the Great Exhibition some fifty years later, locomotives have come far in reimagining and reinventing themselves to serve the people and British industry. The early years showed slow development amongst locomotives: Trevithick's first railway locomotives failed significantly as the engine broke the brittle cast-iron rails. The story is continued through the years when locomotives were developed to serve collieries, a period that lasted for a quarter of a century, and saw many different engineers trying out their ideas; from the rack and pinion railway developed by Blenkinsop and Murray, to George... ISBN : 9781445666860 Class 50s are probably one of the best-loved diesel locomotives that have run on British Rail. Fifty of these powerful, English Electric-powered locomotives were built by EE at their Vulcan foundry from 1967 onwards. They were ordered to work express passenger workings on the northern end of the West Coast Main Line before the advent of electrification. They performed these duties until the first members of the class were transferred away to the Western region in 1974. Here they eliminated the Class 52s from both passenger and also freight workings. All fifty locomotives found their way to the Western Region, and then from 1979 all members of the class visited Doncaster Works for a full refurbishment, which included repainting into large logo livery. The first member... Less

ISBN : 9781445672724 In late 2007 Freightliner placed its order for twenty Class 70 locomotives. General Electric (GE) commenced building these locomotives at its plant in Pennsylvania, USA, culminating in the delivery of the first two locos in late 2009. Further deliveries followed in order to create an initial pool of twenty for Freightliner. One example of the class, No. 70012, was damaged during unloading at Newport Docks and did not enter traffic. The remaining members of Freightliner's pool operated freight traffic for both the Intermodal and Heavy Haul sectors. The `Turkish Demonstrator' ultimately arrived in the UK as a `replacement' for No. 70012 (carrying the temporary number 70099). Towards the end of 2013, another of the UK's freight operators, Colas, committed to using this... Less

ISBN : 9780198607823 Steam locomotives were developed in the early part of the 19th Century, initially by Trevithick, and then most successfully by George Stephenson, whose engine Locomotion inaugurated the famous Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825. For the next 150 years, steam locomotives were further developed and refined, until the advent of new electrical technology superseded them. Although British Railways operated its last main-line steam locomotives in 1968, there is still immense interest in the large numbers of locomotives that have been privately preserved, and which run on heritage railways and in various parts of the world. This book describes the anatomy and physiology of the steam train, to enable all train enthusiasts to understand the workings of the various types... Less

ISBN : 9781473875555 Hereford Locomotive Shed is the first in a series of in-depth studies to look closely at the changing engine allocations and operational responsibilities of motive power depots during the latter days of steam. In Herefords case this was a varied mixture of main line passenger, freight trip working, branch line passenger, station pilot duties and yard shunting. Unusually, the latter remained a steam preserve until months before depot closure in November 1964\. Not forgotten are the depots small sub-sheds, which had varying responsibilities over the years, as the district boundaries changed at Ledbury, Leominster, Ross-on-Wye and Craven Arms. Their very different duties were inevitably a reflection of a bygone age and an all too rapidly changing future. The author... Less

It is the first in the series to tackle an important range of overseas steam locomotives, the German pacific locomotives, which, with the Paris-Orleans pacific in France, were the first of that wheel layout in Europe and came to be the dominant type for express passenger work throughout Western Europe for the following fifty years, until displaced by diesel and electric traction. The German railways in the first two decades of the twentieth century were run principally as regional State railways, and two distinct styles of design developed, which were influenced by the natural terrain. They were built for West Coast services, which had been electrified from London, and would eventually run all the way to Glasgow. They were delivered in Electric Blue livery, complete with cast lion and wheel. They were originally known as the AL6 Class but, under TOPS, became the Class 86s. ISBN : 9781445658711 This book sets out to illustrate locomotive- hauled passenger stock in the twenty-first century. Whilst the vast majority of regular timetabled services are now in the hands of multiple units, there is a surprising variety of hauled workings still to be seen; in fact loco haulage has seen a small renaissance in recent years with the Chiltern Railways services between London and Birmingham and the Arriva Trains Wales services, amongst others. Longer established services include the Sleeper trains between London and both the South-West and Scotland. In addition to regular timetabled services, several operators run extra trains to cater for special events, and stock for these is provided by spot hire companies such as DRS and West Coast Railways. ISBN : 9781445658919 This is a pictorial tribute to the Class 20 locomotive. 228 of these single-cab locos were built from 1957 onwards by English Electric and Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns. They were part of the BR modernization plan to replace steam. There are two different front-end designs, the first carry headcode discs on the cab front and nose end, while the rest carry headcode boxes on both ends. They were mostly used on the Midland, Eastern and Scottish region, but did venture further afield. Withdrawals started in the early 1980s, with most being taken out of traffic by the mid-1990s. Fifteen were sold on to DRS, who rebuilt them as the Class 20/3, and most of these locos are still in service. Hunslet Barclay also operated six for use on weed-killing trains, but these were... Less

ISBN : 9781445649207 In this second volume in a regional series exploring industrial locomotives and railways in England, Wales and Scotland, we move on to Southern England and the West Country. This region, stretching from Kent to Cornwall, was blessed with many varied and intriguing industrial railway systems, which served power stations, collieries, paper mills, docks, quarries, brickworks and the lesser-visited military establishments. Indeed, some of the country's last working industrial steam locomotives were to be found in the south east post-cessation of steam traction on British Railways, and these are covered, along with other forms of traction of standard and narrow gauges. In the following years, until the turn of the twentieth century, many more railroads were built by different companies. Passenger trains declined from the 1950s and today there is only a minimal long-distance passenger service operated by Amtrak, leaving the railroads to concentrate on moving freight. From the 1970s until the 1990s many railroads merged to give the two main railroads there are in the west today: Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific. As well as the two mega railroads, there are many regional and shortline railroads to add diversity. Locomotives in the USA today are mainly built by General Electric and Electro Motive Diesel. ISBN : 9781445667904 The fourth volume in the regional series of books examining the industrial locomotives and railways of England, Wales and Scotland, this volumes covers the counties of Essex, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Norfolk and Lincolnshire. It may be assumed that this region was not industrialized on a particularly broad scale, but, on the contrary, there are many surprises to be found hidden within these pages. Certainly the broadening Thames Estuary stretching east from Purfleet, the point of the crossing of the Queen Elizabeth Bridge over the River Thames, saw much industrial development along its banks. The chalk deposits exploited in Kent were also to be found in a large area to the north of the Thames and the railways once to be found in the Thurrock and Barrington areas will... Less

ISBN : 9781783831098 'Great Western Eight-Coupled Heavy Freight Locomotives' is the first of a series of 'Locomotive Profiles' to be published by Pen & Sword. It will describe the conception, design, building and operation of the fleet of powerful locomotives built in the first half of the twentieth century to meet the demands of the growing South Wales coal and steel industries and the West Midlands area served by the Great Western Railway. Whilst concentrating mainly on the standard designs of the great locomotive engineer, George Jackson Churchward, the 28XX and 47XX 2-8-0 locomotives, it will also cover the 2-8-0 and 2-8-2 tank engines designed for the South Wales Valleys mining areas and coal exports through Newport, Cardiff, Barry and Swansea Docks, and other 2-8-0 locomotives... ISBN : 9781445657912 This is a pictorial tribute to the British Rail workhorse, the Class 31. Over 260 of these locos were built by Brush at Loughborough from 1958 onwards, and they would work on most regions for the next forty years, with a few examples still working today. Working both passenger and freight trains, they were a success, although their original Mirrlees engines would be replaced with English Electric power units in the late 1960s. They have worn many different liveries, with most being portrayed in this book. Unfortunately most have now gone for scrap, however quite a number have been preserved and can still be seen running on their preserved lines up and down the country. This book acts as a personal recollection of a favourite class of loco. For those fortunate... Less

ISBN : 9781445671260 For almost as long as there have been railways, there has been ?departmental' rolling stock. This name is used to describe any vehicle that operates in non-revenue earning capacities. Ranging from engineers' vehicles, to generator vans, to vehicles used to help move specific types of stock on the network, these have long been the unsung heroes of Britain's rail network, helping to keep things running and working hard behind the scenes to keep the country's passenger and freight traffic running smoothly. With this terrific collection of unpublished images, perfect for rail enthusiast and modeller alike, Rich Mackin documents a variety of these interesting and often under- appreciated members of our railway system.

ISBN : 9781445648330 The industrial and minor railways of the former counties of Cumberland and Westmorland are neglected topics deserving of greater attention. West Cumberland has traditionally been a mining, steelmaking and quarrying region, with some areas of rail-served industry surviving today. Standard and narrow gauge railways and their locomotives have supported these industries from the late-1950s to the present day. Gordon Edgar uses his excellent collection of photographs to explore these fascinating railways and their locomotives.

ISBN : 9781473864450 This photographic album showing the class 47 diesel locomotives has been compiled by a well-established author of similar titles, David Cable.More examples of this class were built than any other design of modern traction. They also carried more varieties of color schemes than any other type, and these are well portrayed in this volume. The class 47 was truly the maid of all work on the British Rail system for the forty-odd years since their inception in the early 1960s, and certain members of the class are still in daily use.All types of traffic from major expresses to coal trains were worked by these engines, and this full color album illustrates many examples of an engine that could be seen in almost all parts of Great Britain from Inverness to Penzance and Dover... ISBN : 9781445666235 The Class 08/09 was to become the main diesel shunter of the British Railways era. Just over a thousand of the two classes were built from 1952 onwards at five different British Rail workshops over a ten-year period. Just about every corner of the UK would be home to one or more of these shunting locomotives. They were ideal for yard and depot shunting, and also acted as station pilots at nearly every major station. The main difference between the two classes was that the Class 09 had a different maximum speed, and most were also fitted with extra air pipes to work with Southern Region EMUs. With the constriction of UK freight workings, a lot of yards were taken out of use, and the trip workings that these locomotives performed soon ceased. With the advent of... Less
