Hawse holes have been present since ancient times, used by the Romans on “trabaccoli”, that is, small sailing ships used both to transport people and to fish in the upper Adriatic Sea. Around the hawse holes, dove the anchor chains pass, concentric circles were painted, which resembled the shape of eyes. These eyes were drawn on the bow of the boat because it was thought that the eyes could guide the boat and navigation along the right routes, avoiding pitfalls and dangers.
