Coming from the dark, fragrant, oily resin of Aquilaria trees, produced by the tree itself to defend itself from the attack of a particular fungus, Oud is also called Agarwood, Aloeswood and Eaglewood. It is the Aloe spoken of in the Bible, and is regarded as a spiritual aid. Arab peoples have loved the scent of Oud essential oil for centuries. A famous Arab Caliph said, "If I were a merchant, I would only sell Oud, so that if I did not make a profit, I would profit from its sensational scent." In fact, Oud is so famous that most Agarwood trees are close to extinction. It is believed to have originated in the Assam region of India, and from there spread throughout Southeast Asia. Oud now comes from India, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and the Philippines; as the trees thin out, demand continues to grow: the cost of oil today exceeds 50,000 dollars per kilo. Oud is one of the most precious essential oils in existence. Its composition evokes different facets: woody, animale, intense, sensual.
