In 1927, the young Cypriot, Paul Petridès, moved to Paris. Petridès was most taken by the works of Utrillo, who was by the late 1920s legendary in his reclusiveness. When schizophrenia took hold of the twenty-one-year-old Utrillo in 1904, his mother encouraged him to take up painting.
