Growing up in the 1950s and early 1960s California pop culture, Hardy went on to earn an art school degree from the San Francisco Art Institute. He then learned to tattoo by apprenticing himself to master artists such as Phil Sparrow (the official tattoo artist of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club).
