His special gifts with birds and animals are legendary. In 1224 he received the stigmata while praying on Mt. Alvernia, a rare miracle among saints. His efforts to join the monastery at Assisi were rebuffed because of his sickly appearance but he was finally installed at San Paolo near Forli in Romagna province in the north of Italy.
