Solid copper rivets are held firmly together by forcing the washer over the slightly thicker stem which has a chamfered end - position the washer on the stem and with the setting tool and a mallet knock the washer down the stem until it is in position - any extra stem is removed by pincers and any burrs are ironed out by using the concaved part of the setting tool.
