Our classic matryoshkas straight from Russia The Matryoshka is one of the objects most commonly associated with Russia; also called Russian Nesting dolls stacking dolls or nesting dolls, matryoshkas are made up of 3 to 10 dolls of increasing size, which fit inside each other. The first matryoshkas were probably created in the late 19th century, and represented a peasant woman holding a rooster under her arm. This is also where matryoshkas get their name, since in Russian a " Matryoshka " is a robust-looking country woman. The rooster symbolized fertility, and in fact matryoshka dolls are still often perceived as pledge of fertility.
