The SG 38 school glider was developed in 1938 at the Schneider aircraft factory in Grunau (near today's Jelenia Góra in Poland). The abbreviation SG therefore does not stand for "Schul-Gleiter", as is often assumed, but for "Schneider, Grunau". Because the SG 38 was particularly suitable for the training that was common at the time due to its durability, it was mainly used for flight training in the 1940s.
