Banta is a classic lemon flavored soft drink popular in India. A carbonated lemon flavoured soft drink popular in India. Though the origin of its name is from Punjabi word for marble (banta), Banta has been sold since the late 19th century, long before popular carbonated drinks arrived. The drink is often sold mixed with lemon juice, crushed ice, chaat masala and kala namak (black salt) as a carbonated variant of popular lemonades. The Codd bottle was designed and manufactured to enclose a marble and a rubber washer/gasket in the neck. The bottles are filled upside down, and pressure of the gas in the bottle forced the marble against the washer, sealing in the carbonation. The bottle was pinched into a special shape to provide a chamber into which the marble was pushed to open the bottle.
